Exercise tips for at home

  Balancing and crawling
  • Walk along a little obstacle course drawn with pavement chalk. It’s great fun, of course, if you’re allowed to draw your own obstacle course
  • Balance along a line drawn with pavement chalk or balance on a piece of string. It can be a straight line, but a winding path is fun too
  • Step from beer mat to beer mat, or draw shapes with pavement chalk
  • Draw a hopscotch court (with pavement chalk)
  • Crawl through empty boxes (playing in a big box is fun anyway – let your imagination run wild and pretend you’re driving a car)
  • Crawl under the table (you can create a cool den by draping a rug or duvet cover over the table)
  • Move swimming rings (wings) with your foot
  Jumping
  • Jump off a kerb or the bottom step of a staircase
  • Jump over a piece of string, a line drawn in chalk on the pavement or a branch in the woods
  • Jump in and out of a hoop or a bicycle tyre
  • Jumping on the trampoline in the garden
  Throwing, catching and rolling
  • Bouncing a balloon or beach ball (bouncing means keeping it in the air with your hands)
  • Keeping a balloon in the air with a rolled-up newspaper
  • Throwing a balloon or beach ball up in the air and catching it again
  • Make a sock ball (two socks folded together) and try to throw it into the laundry basket. You can also do this with a wad of newspaper
  • Roll a ball back and forth whilst sitting opposite each other with legs apart
  • Roll a ball through the ‘gate’ (someone sitting with legs apart)
  • Roll a ball against empty bottles
  • Throw a ball into a bucket
  Fine motor skills
  • Colours
  • Stacking blocks – can you build a tall tower? Taller than Mum or Dad?
  • Placing clothes pegs on a beer mat or hanging them on a string
  • Rolling over – can you roll across the floor like a sausage?

  Playground

Going to a playground with Mum or Dad is always fun and offers lots of possibilities

  • Swinging on the swing
  • Climbing and scrambling, for example on a ladder
  • Sliding down the slide at a playground
  • Playing on the seesaw with Mum or Dad
